A Brief History of Kinlochleven

For 100 years Kinlochleven produced Aluminium from 1905 – 2000. However in October 1980’s the West Highland Way was opened, it is 154 km (96 miles) long, running from Milngavie north of Glasgow to Fort William in the Scottish Highlands, with an element of hill walking in the route. The trail is Scotland’s first officially designated Long Distance Route.

In 1901 an Act of Parliament was passed which allowed the British Aluminium Company to utilize the great waterpower of the two areas known as the Blackwater and Loch Eilde basins for hydro; Kinlochleven’ s future path was determined.
